Bird Guard and Dryer Vent Cover Installation in Kitchener

A starling can get through a dryer hood with a broken flap in an afternoon. Grass hanging out of the vent in May is how most people find out.

Every spring the calls change from slow drying to birds. Starlings, house sparrows and the occasional squirrel find a dryer hood with a missing or stuck flap, push past it, and build a nest in the first foot of warm, dry duct. The dryer stops venting, the laundry room smells, and there is a nest full of chicks behind the wall. This page covers clearing it and making sure it does not happen again.

How birds get in

A dryer hood is supposed to have a damper — a flap or a set of louvres — that opens when the dryer runs and closes when it stops. Dampers fail. The plastic flap on a builder-grade hood warps in the sun, lint jams it open, the hinge pin rusts, or a previous owner removed it because it rattled. Once the flap is open, a bird sees a warm, sheltered tube at exactly nesting height. Hoods on north and east walls and hoods under a deck or a soffit are the usual targets. Kitchener's 1960s to 80s houses with the hood on the basement wall a foot above grade get them low; the stacked townhouses in Doon and Huron Park get them in the roof caps.

Clearing a nest

Most nesting birds in Ontario are protected while they are on the nest, and the technician will not remove an active nest with eggs or chicks in it. Starlings and house sparrows are not native and are treated differently, but the practical approach is the same: if the birds have fledged, the nest comes out that day; if they have not, the visit is scheduled for when they have, and the dryer stays off or is used sparingly until then. Once the nest is out, the run is cleaned fully, because nest material travels back along the duct, and the hood is dealt with so it cannot happen again next year.

Hoods and guards

• Replacing the hood. A proper dryer hood with a free-swinging damper that seals when closed is the first line of defence and the right fix for a broken flap. Louvred hoods with three or four thin flaps are the ones birds get past most easily; a single-flap or spring-loaded hood does better.
• Vent guards. A cage-style guard over the hood keeps birds out while leaving the opening clear for lint to exit. The technician fits guards that can be opened for cleaning and that do not use fine mesh.
• What not to install. Fine mesh screens, hardware cloth over the opening, and bathroom-fan louvres. All of them trap lint and turn a bird problem into a fire problem. If a previous installer put a screen on your hood, it comes off.
• Roof caps. Upper-unit vents in townhouses and low-rises terminate in a roof cap that birds and squirrels reach easily. Caps with a damper and a guard are available, and roof access is arranged with the building.

Other things that get into a hood

Wasps in late summer, mice in fall through a low basement-wall hood, and squirrels in a roof cap. The guard handles most of it. Wildlife removal beyond clearing the vent — a raccoon in the attic, for example — is a different trade and not this service.

Signs you already have a nest

Grass or twigs showing at the hood, a flap stuck open, birds going in and out of the wall in the morning, chirping from behind the dryer, a sudden jump in drying time in April or May, or a warm, musty smell in the laundry room. Do not push a brush in from the dryer end if you suspect a nest; it packs the material further along the run and can injure the birds.

Timing

The best time to replace a hood and fit a guard is before nesting starts, in March or early April, or in the fall once the season is over. It is also a natural add-on to a routine vent cleaning, which is when the technician sees the state of the hood anyway.

Not included

Furnace and bathroom exhaust hoods on the same wall are a different system and not part of this service, though the technician will mention a broken one if they see it. Air duct cleaning is a separate service and not offered here.
