Dryer Vent Repair and Rerouting in Kitchener
Some vents should not be cleaned. They should be replaced. This is the page for when the airflow reading says the run itself is the problem.
Cleaning a vent that is crushed flat behind the dryer, disconnected at a joint in the ceiling, or terminating in a chimney chase fixes nothing. The technician's first job is to work out which you have, and a surprising number of Kitchener vents fall into this category. This page covers what gets repaired, what gets rerouted, and how it is done.
Problems that come up in Kitchener houses
- Crushed transition behind the dryer. The most common one, in houses of every age. The dryer is pushed back against the wall and the foil loop behind it is flattened to a fraction of its size. Fixed with a short, straight semi-rigid metal transition and, where space is tight, a periscope-style box that lets the dryer sit closer to the wall.
- Foil or plastic flex through the whole run. Standard in the 1960s to 80s houses in Stanley Park, Forest Heights and Rosemount when the basement was unfinished. It sags, catches lint on every ridge, and plastic burns. Replaced with rigid metal duct, joints taped with foil tape rather than screws that catch lint, hung properly with slope back toward the dryer.
- Disconnected joints in the ceiling. A basement renovation or a plumber working above pulls a joint apart, and the dryer has been exhausting into the joist space for years. Found by the lint on the insulation. Reconnected, or the run replaced if it is flex.
- Vents that end in the wrong place. Century homes downtown, in Cedar Hill and around Victoria Park have dryers vented into window wells, under decks, into soffits, into old chimney chases and, sometimes, into the basement with a sock on the end. Each of those puts warm, wet, lint-laden air where it causes damage. The fix is a new run to a proper hood on an outside wall, which may mean a new wall penetration.
- Runs that are simply too long. Thirty-five feet with five elbows across a bungalow will never vent well no matter how clean. Sometimes the answer is a shorter route to a closer wall; sometimes it is a booster fan rated for dryer use, installed where it can be cleaned.
- Screens and wrong hoods. A hood with a mesh screen, a hood with a flap that sticks, or a bathroom-fan louvre used as a dryer hood. Replaced with a proper dryer hood with a free-swinging damper.
How rerouting is done
The technician traces the existing run, measures the shortest practical path to an outside wall, and quotes the new run in rigid metal with the fewest elbows possible. Where a new wall penetration is needed, it is cored through brick, block or siding, sealed, flashed and finished with a new hood. Old ducting comes out and is disposed of through the Region of Waterloo's waste system. Dryer exhaust duct construction and termination fall under Ontario's Building Code, and a new exterior penetration may be a permit question for the City of Kitchener; the technician tells you when that applies rather than guessing.
Finished basements
When the run is behind a drywall ceiling in a finished Forest Heights or Country Hills basement, replacing it means opening the ceiling along the route. The technician quotes the opening and the closing honestly, and tells you whether cleaning alone will get airflow to an acceptable level so you can decide. Sometimes a shorter new route through an unfinished utility area avoids the finished ceiling entirely.
Gas dryers
A gas dryer is moved within the reach of its flexible connector for vent work. If the reroute means the dryer has to relocate, the gas line is disconnected and reconnected by a TSSA-registered gas technician, and that is arranged separately from this work.

Furnace and air conditioning ductwork is a separate service and not offered on this site. Repairs to the dryer itself belong to an appliance technician. Structural or masonry work beyond coring a vent hole is another trade.
Frequently asked questions
Is foil dryer duct against code?
Current guidance and manufacturers' instructions call for rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, with the flexible transition behind the dryer kept short and metal. Thin foil and plastic flex are the material most often involved when a vent fails. The technician will tell you what you have and quote the replacement as a separate line.
My dryer vents into the basement with a lint trap on the end. Is that okay?
No. It puts warm, wet, lint-laden air into the house, which is a moisture problem in any Kitchener basement and a worse one in a damp century home. Gas dryers must never vent indoors. The fix is a run to a proper outside hood.
Can you install a booster fan?
Where a run is genuinely too long to shorten, yes — a fan rated for dryer exhaust, installed where it can be reached for cleaning, with a pressure switch so it runs only with the dryer. It is the second choice after a shorter route.
